Times hotel of the year 2020. A listed mansion house, set within 55 acres of natural woodland. Our vision was to challenge wastefulness and uniformity. Inspired by the resourcefulness of the past, where old estates used to manage their resources and land holistically, We set out to reuse and repair the existing site’s materials, stripping back clutter and unnecessary furniture to create more thoughtful spaces. We asked ourselves the fundamental question, What do we really need? A radical approach was taken to respect the bones of the building by stripping back the clumsy refurbishments of the 1990s, and expose the raw finishes of the historic mansion house as it sits today. Unlike most projects, Birch marks the beginning of a new type of hospitality experience in the UK. Creative director Andreas Christodoulou worked on this project as a design leader whilst at Red Deer Ltd.
